Google Begins Using Search Results Pages to Warn Users of Viruses

Category: Internet, Release Date: 21-Jul-2011

In an interesting move, one that could foreshadow future plans, Google has starting using their search result pages to alert users their computers are infected with a virus. For now the tool is focused on one particular virus, but could this be expanded to detect more in the future?

According to Google:

“Recently, we found some unusual search traffic while performing routine maintenance on one of our data centers. After collaborating with security engineers at several companies that were sending this modified traffic, we determined that the computers exhibiting this behavior were infected with a particular strain of malicious software, or malware."

The current notification doesn’t actually remove the virus from your machine, but aims to alert users of the problem and remind them to update their antivirus software to remove the threat. Good one Google!
