Google continues its quest to speed up the web with a new image file format

Category: Internet, Release Date: 01-Jun-2011

Google has been making strides lately in its quest to speed up the web. Over the last few months they’ve introduced several tools to help developers speed up their sites and they’ve also improved on a few standards that reduce the size of images and videos, some of the biggest bandwidth hogs on the net.

Hot on the heels of the new WebM video format, Last week Google introduced the WebP (pronounced ‘Weppy’) format for images. This new file format is smaller than JPG’s while apparently providing a higher quality image.

Google says “WebP is a new image format that provides lossy compression for photographic images. In a large scale study of 900,000 web images, WebP images were 39.8% smaller than jpeg images of similar quality.”

Currently, the format is still in it’s infant stages and not fully supported throughout the web. But who knows; Soon will we all be referring to weppys instead of jpgs?
